Shut Up and Listen

Do you remember Lilly Moscovitz’s “Shut Up and Listen” TV show from Princess Diaries?

The idea of “shut up and listen” in Lilly’s world was to make everyone listen to her - and while I think she’s pretty funny, I think we can all agree that sometimes making that demand can seem a little on the diva-esque side of things.

However, the idea that we should “shut up and listen” to each other has a different meaning. If we were to truly listen to each other, and not just jump at the next opportunity to speak, we might actually be able to resolve conflict better, have more meaningful conversations and learn more about our friends and family than we would if we were just trying to think of the next big thing to say.

I’ll admit - I am the worst at this. I LOVE talking. I love it when people laugh at my jokes, or think that what I’m saying is brilliant, however, I love learning about others more. Dave Carnegie, author of How to Win Friends and Influence People, states “You can make more friends in two months by becoming more interested in other people than you can in two years trying to get other people interested in you.”

When we take the time to ask others questions about themselves and then stop to REALLY listen to their answer, people feel more deeply loved than they could have ever imagined. Think of it from your perspective, when was the last time someone asked you a question and took the time to listen to your response? How did you feel? Loved, important, valued?

Some of the best conversations I’ve had with people require very little words coming from my mouth. I can also think of some great conversations where someone took the time to actually listen to me and make me feel valued.

So while this #RealTalkTuesday may be just a short and sweet one, it’s a gentle reminder to remember to take time and listen to those around you. The best leaders are ones who listen.

Here’s a challenge for you to help me practice listening - tell me what you want to read about on our #RealTalkTuesday blog posts. From body image, to wedding planning to how to balance work, family, exercise, friendships etc. we cover it all! Help me listen to you!
