Alright, we get it. Engagement pictures are hard to prepare for! For most people, this is one of the first times they have been in front of a professional camera! Naturally, you’re probably looking for guidance on how to prepare for your shoot!

Don’t worry, we’ve come up with the best tips on how to rock your engagement pictures and be #modelready featuring pictures from my engagement session with Christina and Jeremiah Photography!

1. Find a Photographer for Your Wedding First

A lot of wedding photographers offer and engagement package to their clients! Take advantage of this because it allows you to build a relationship with your photographer before the big day. Be sure to look at the type of edits that a potential photographer does. To me, this is the most important aspect! If your planning a “moody” wedding but hire a photographer that specializes in “light and airy” photography, then your wedding may not be glorified the way you’d imagined it!

Also, consider the subjects of their photos. Do they seem relaxed and comfortable to you? This can tell you how well the photographers interact with their clients!

Psssst… You and your fiancé are NOT the only people uncomfy in front of the camera! Most couples struggle with the idea of engagement photos! Just take a deep breath and listen to your photographer, they will make you look like 100 bucks!

2. Do Some Research

Head to Pinterest and start pinning, girlfriend! Engagement pictures are meant to be personal; they should represent who you are as a couple. Most of the time, this is your first time meeting your photographer, so you want to be sure to nurture the relationship between you both!

It can be nice to pin a few inspiration pictures to show to your photographer the week before your shoot! This allows them to get a feel for your vision and the style you vibe with! I fell in love with a gorgeous set of lake pics and my photographer was so excited to do it for us!

Note: don’t over do it with the suggestions! Give them 2-3 pics of what you like and let them do their job!

3. Keep an Open Mind

Trust me, your photographer knows more than you do. Let them do their job! Some of the positions they will put you in may feel awkward (I for real thought I was going to fall off the mountain in this picture!), but they have the advantage.

Your Photographer can see when you look awkward, they know how to position your arm so it doesn’t look awkward, and they know what it takes to get that Pinterest shot you showed them!

Trust. Them.

4. Work with them

You photographer will likely give you some suggestion on locations and shots before your shoot. Work with them to find a place and style that fits your personality!

If your photographer is coming from out of town, you may need to recommend your favorite places. Or you may need to let them know that you’re not a nature girl and that you’d feel better represented in a city inspired shoot!

Ultimately, they work for you, so they should be ready to give up their dreams for your vision. But remember, your photographer is a professional. Take their advice and deeply consider what they tell you!

5. Decide your outfits before hand

We have a great post all about what to wear for your engagement photos, so I won’t go into too much detail now.

But I will say this: wear something that you both feel comfortable in! If you know that you are not going to feel comfortable in a dress, don’t wear one. How you’re feeling shows very clearly on your face and an easy way to control that is to wear something that you love!

I hope this helped you to feel better about your engagement pictures! Remember: if you’re not feeling relaxed, you’re not going to look relaxed! So, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you’re just taking some pictures with the love of your life!
